Bohemian Mantle Lustres-Sold

~Sold, Thankyou~

Your search is over!   Here we have a trio of gorgeous, matching Bohemian mantle lustres; two 13.5" large goblet shaped lustres types along with a 15" sibling lamp base. Beautifully hand painted and in excellent condition, each is decorated with a traditional floral motif. Although there are no chips, crack or repairs, there is minor wear/fading on the floral pattern for the two goblet types. We are impressed with how perfectly the shades of colour of the glass and crystals match. The set is a marvelous tribute of the craftsmanship and dedication that went into producing these fine Bohemian works of art.

Lustres are mantle and table decorations, or pedestal vases with hanging glass prisms. Those with one row of prisms are more common, while the double hung prisms are rarer and usually more costly.  The name of the mantle lustre refers to the prisms.  A single glass prism is called a lustre or luster, with either spelling being correct.

BOHEMIAN GLASS: Bohemian crystal glass, composed of silicate of potash and lime, is comparatively easy of recognition, but most of it is not so old as we would like to think. Probably very little 18th-century Bohemian glass came to this country. In 1820 and thereafter considerable of this glass came in through Baltimore and it became extremely popular in the Southern states. The roots of Bohemian glass are, perhaps, in the old glass factories of Venice. It was famous in the 16th century and for a long time Bohemia was the center of the crystal glass-making. The range of colors, also, is considerable; reds, blues, ambers and greens, all in various shades. The gold ruby is the most popular. Much of the effectiveness of Bohemian glass lies in its engraving and in the cutting through of an opaque colored outer surface to disclose a clear or a ground-glass pattern beneath. Further embellishment is often added by painting or gilding, and it was in Bohemia that the art of etching on glass was discovered by Henry Schwanhardt about 1670. (Antique Digest)

The Coalport factory was established in Shropshire by John Rose in the 1790's.
In 1899 John Rose & Co. became a limited liability company under its new owner Peter Bruff. The new title which was adopted included the old name.   From c.1891 the word 'England' was added. This became \'Made in England\' in about 1920.  In 1926 production was moved to the Staffordshire and in 1951 the trade style was amended to the simpler "Coalport China Ltd."

J&G Meakin 14" Serving Platter

This J&G Meakin 14" by 10" Serving Platter has a 1912-37 backstamp mark.  This rectangular serving platter features an elegant design with pink, yellow and blue flowers over a black border.  In the four corners is a bouquet of flowers with a gold accent. The trim and platter are all rimmed by gold gilt.  There are no chips, cracks or crazing. It has no wear and is in excellent condition. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection.

The firm J & G Meakin was founded in 1851 when he was joined by his two sons James and George. When the father died the business was moved to Market Street, Hanley. The two brothers were quick to realise the potentials of the export market and the business grew rapidly. George went to America to set up the sales market. James remained in England and managed the pottery works and the shipping.

The business grew so well that a new factory was built on the side of the Caldon canal and so the Eagle Pottery was built in Hanley in 1859.

Later the Eastwood works were purchased which was founded by another brother, Charles.  In 1887 J & G Meakin purchased the Eastwood Pottery from brother Charles Meakin, this propelled them to be the largest pottery company in Britian. Their aim was to provide an attractive and strong china with distinct patterns made for the tastes of the individual markets that they serviced. The majority of Meakin's wares were made for export to the USA and British Empire Colonies.

Johnson Brothers "Indian Tree" Gravy Boat and Underplate

This gravy boat and underplate by Johnson Brothers of England is in the "Indian Tree Pattern". The pattern is “Green Key on White”.   Indian Tree is a versatile pattern that will work with a wide range of décors and is a design that many manufacturers have made over the years because of the design’s popularity. The pattern consisting of an Oriental crooked tree branch, landscape, exotic flowers and foliage is predominantly greens, pinks, blues and oranges on a white ground.

The Charles Street Works factory had already established a legacy for crafting fine dinnerware when three Johnson brothers acquired it via a bankruptcy sale in 1882. Grandsons of the Meakin dinnerware lineage, the brothers shared a heritage in the production of fine dinnerware. Building a reputation on basic whiteware known as "semi-porcelain," the company created a slip that had the delicate characteristics of fine china, but the durability of ironstone. Johnson Brothers continued its growth in the tableware industry into World War I. Afterwards the company was able to introduce wares that, when chipped, revealed an underlayer that was the same color as the outer glazed body. The Queen of England awarded the company the "Queen's Award to Industry" for their contributions to the tableware industry and to the English economy. Although they struggled during the Second World War, the company managed to survive this hardship with sporadic shipments of product to the United States. In 1968, Johnson Brothers joined the Wedgwood Group and they remain a leader in the tableware industry.

Johnsons Brothers Indian Tree 16" serving platter

This very  large 16" x 10 ½”  oval platter by Johnson Brothers of England in the "Indian Tree Pattern". The pattern is “Green Key on White”.   Indian Tree is a versatile pattern that will work with a wide range of decors and is a design that many manufacturers have made over the years because of the design’s popularity. The pattern consisting of an Oriental crooked tree branch, landscape, exotic flowers and foliage is predominantly greens, pinks, blues and oranges on a white ground.  There are no chips, cracks, wear or crazing and it is in excellent condition with very vivid colors.

No. 761201 dates the plate to 1931.  It is clean and damage free of nicks, scratches and wear.

Myott, Son & Co. Limited originally operated from the Alexander Pottery in Stoke, Staffordshire, in the North of England. It was a family run business producing earthenware from 1898. Run by two brothers, Ashley and Sydney Myott, the company soon had to expand to meet growing demand. They moved to the Brownfield’s Works in Cobridge, just North of Stoke-on-Trent and then extended the operation to the adjacent Upper Hanley Pottery in 1925.

With the growing success of competitor output, the company began to produce hand painted Art Deco wares, popularised by their varied ranges of vases and jugs. Many of these pieces survive today suggesting that output was extensive. Geometric shapes such as the fan and pyramid vase are highly sought after with brown and orange the predominant colours used in decoration. There were also a number of collaborations in the 1930,s, most notably with Goldscheider (an Austrian figure and wall mask producer) and B.A.G Co. Ltd (British American Glass). These Deco pieces display the famous gold Myott crown mark on the base. White ware was produced for the Cunard shipping company with the provision of cubist style tea sets.

There was a fire at the factory in 1949 in which many of the office files were destroyed including vital pattern information.

The longer platter is 6 1/2" across and 12" long.

The Deco Years
After the expansion of earlier factories in 1925, in addition to their traditional ceramic tableware production, the company began producing in the 1930s an extensive range of hand painted Art Deco wares. Success must have been virtually instant judging by the vast numbers of such pieces surviving today.

Particularly noted for production of Art Deco vases, jugs and dinnerware, pieces in brighter colours are highly sought after. Orange and brown were the dominant colours used for decoration, in fact a very limited palette was incorporated into the designs - a trick used by artists of the period. Or maybe it was a case of colour availability or perhaps stability as many of the pieces suffer from paint flaking and glaze crazing which reduces value considerably. However collectors may have to suffer imperfect examples of some of the rarer shapes and patterns as availability of some of the pieces can be extremely limited today.
